A note about Pocket PC Handhelds

There are two ways to go in selection from the Pocket PC family of handhelds:

1) Pocket PC handhelds by Dell and Hewlett-Packard are reliable and cost from $275 to $800, depending on the model. To use them in the field you might want to invest in a waterproof case. However, if you want to use the handheld with GPS or a digital camera the waterproof case might have to be taken off in order to insert the instrument card into the slot.

2) Professional Ruggedized Waterproof handhelds

For a bit more money - about $1,700, you can get a ruggedized and waterproof, professional quality TDS Recon data Pocket PC unit. And, the Recon allows you to add a GPS or digital camera all within a professional grade waterproof enclosure. (see hardware section)

   TDS recon pocket pc handheld

PC Desktop Program

The PC side of the RegenCE system consists of a MS Windows desktop program that merges the handheld data so that final reporting can be done.  Survey data can be translated into spreadsheets, Phoenix Professional and the BC MoF Genus system.

The software can be used independently or as an integrated data management solution with Phoenix Professional or with the BC MoF Genus system.

  • FS659 report data created from field surveys.
  • Stratum summaries.
  • Review and edit plot data.
  • Replay stratum voice notes taken in the field, then enter comments easily using a full-size IBM keyboard.
  • Export function to Phoenix Professional and other systems.
  • Import function from Phoenix Professional.
  • View photos taken in the field; then export them to Phoenix Professional or use them in your reports.
  • Design and format your own reports.
  • Transfer data to and from handhelds using an explorer interface.

Corporate Data Management Module

A separate customized database program can be designed to meet corporate standardized data management and security requirements.

  • Maintain standard codes for tree and competing vegetation species over multiple users (contractors and in-house personnel).
  • Maintain a repository for all raw field handheld and summary information from contractors for backup and security purposes.
  • Built-in email function to send pre-set spreadsheets containing codes and openings to multiple survey groups.

click icon for downloadable Adobe PDR brochure.

Is it a problem maintaining standardized competing vegetation codes or sampling standards among several contractors?

Would it be efficient and convenient to be able to have a built-in email client in your software send to contractors pre-set spreadsheets openings, strata, survey standards, BGZ codes from PhoenixPro along with standard vegetation codes?

Would you like to be able to store the raw handheld data along with the electronic summary information for backup and security purposes?

Would you like to be able to print a  map showing low stocked areas in the opening that can be distributed for replanting?

Call us if you would like to incorporate some or all of these concepts into your operation.

EcoSoft Software - 3 Reasons Why EcoSoft Means Quality.

1.  Application development library:

Our data collection software is generically named EcoSoft. Several DOS WinCE (and MS Windows CE) products are available. We use a specialized data collection development "library" - a toolkit that allows us to create stable software in a much shorter time frame compared to development from scratch.  This library and our expertise allow us to develop software in an affordable time frame.

2.  Forester Tools create acceptance and usability:

One of our strong points is our ability to incorporate forester "tools" making the software more than just a data collection application. Our "tools" save time and money for field staff. For example, common tools we incorporate into applications are graphical tree height calculators, statistical graphs and tables, prism limiting distance calculations and automatic IN/OUT tree determination, geometric shape selection and measurements for automatic log volume deductions. Also, we incorporate several "tricks" learned over the years that greatly quicken data entry.

3.  Our knowledge in operations, theory, and the field:

We  utilize expertise from highly regarded technical experts in the forestry field, as well as, field personnel in order to ensure our software is useful and easy to use.  We have been involved in forestry data collection software development since 1983!
